HORSEPOWER
. Horsepower is the unit of measure used to measure power. While horsepower was often used in the past to determine power, it is rarely used today. It is nowadays accepted to express power in watts, which is a derived unit of the SI system. Horsepower is denoted by HP. The relationship between these units is 1 hp = 735.5 W. The term – horsepower- was introduced at the end of the 18th century by James Watt, a Scottish engineer, who experimented with comparing the performance of heavy-duty horses with a steam engine. One horsepower corresponds to the power required to lift a body weighing 33,000 pounds per foot per minute. One horsepower is about 50% higher than average horses.
